1840 SOCIETY
On the sesquicentennial of the founding of the University's first root college, Rutersville, SU established the 1840 Society to recognize alumni, parents, faculty, and friends who have recognized the University in their estate plans or made other planned giving arrangements that benefit SU.
The foresight and planning of those who arrange a deferred gift today is just as important to the future of the institution as the vision of Col. William B. Travis, who called for the establishment of a Methodist presence in Texas in 1835, and Martin Ruter, who answered Travis' call by riding 1,500 miles on horseback from Pennsylvania to Texas to found Rutersville College—the first institution of higher learning in Texas and one of Southwestern's "root" colleges.
Just as Southwestern's founders could not have imagined the national recognition of SU today, so today's students and faculty can only imagine what challenges they will face tomorrow. We do know that higher education will always be crucial to the future of our community, state, and nation.
